Hydrogen is Clean
Though most of today's hydrogen comes from petroleum, the carbon can be prevented from polluting.
As oil becomes more expensive, hydrogen sources will become increasingly green, including
- Conversion of waste heat and toxic waste materials into hydrogen.
- Bacteria which produce hydrogen directly from sunlight
- Advanced forms of electrolysis (splitting water to obtain hydrogen)
- Solar electrolysis (using the sun to split water directly)
The chief byproduct of burning hydrogen is pure water. Some nitrogen gas can also result in small quantities, but nitrogen is not considered a greenhouse gas.
